Sollier

I always used Playmobil figurines to reenact my favorite movies, but artist Pierre-Adrien Sollier recreates famous works of art with Playmobil shapes, painting images of the plastic toys in the place of people and animals.
Sollier's paintings are, as you might expect, rather playful, taking familiar paintings and substituting in those ever-smiling figurines. Even though Sollier's artistic tributes are paintings, his use of toys as the subjects make them almost resemble dioramas — or, at the very least, a child's playtime.

Mongiello

We love toys and we’re sure many of you do too. We were drawn to French artist Lucas Mongiello recent works, which consisted of toys he collected over the years encased in several Victorian taxidermist’s domes. His work captures the cultural histories we have all descended from and is something we should be proud of. Definitely a very well executed series. Check out more of his work after the jump.

Slinkachu

Gent - De Londense street artist Slinkachu zal volgende week voor Museumnacht zes mini-installaties maken aan het Gentse Museum voor Schone Kunsten. De miniatuur tafereeltjes van Slinkachu gaan al jaren de hele wereld rond.        

De Londense straatartiest startte in 2006 met zijn project Little People. Zes jaar later was het met You are here eindelijk aan Antwerpen om het decor te vormen voor de miniatuurtaferelen. Met zijn minuscule poppetjes wil Slinkachu mensen aanzetten zich meer bewust te zijn van hun omgeving. De poppetjes komen meestal uit modelbouwpakketten voor miniatuurtreinen. Het project gaat zowel om het plaatsen van de taferelen als de fotografie ervan.

Cool lot of 7 little plastic cowboys, likely dating from the late 60s based on the rest of the estate. These fellers are in various positions, including throwing a lasso and shootin'! Each cowboy is very bowlegged - probably they originally came with horses or bulls to ride, but their animals left for greener pastures! Set of 7 are all in very good vintage condition - some with painted details like a silver color or blue boots - colors vary as shown - no two colors are the same. Each cowboy is made from hard plastic and is about 2" tall x 1" across at widest.

Gustave Van de Woestyne

Gastvrijheid voor vreemdelingen 1920

Gustave Van de Woestyne had een grote bewondering voor de Italiaanse muurschilderkunst van de vijftiende eeuw. Na de Eerste Wereldoorlog begon hij zelf te experimenteren met de fresco-techniek. Gastvrijheid voor vreemdelingen uit 1920 is daarvan een mooi voorbeeld. Het is afkomstig van het woonhuis van de kunstenaar, het ‘Rozenhuis’ in Waregem. Van de Woestyne woonde er van 1919 tot 1926. Hij schilderde hier zichzelf terwijl hij een reiziger uitnodigt in zijn woning. De ellende van het volk na de oorlog, waarover Van de Woestyne in zijn brieven uit die tijd met veel medeleven berichtte, lag vermoedelijk aan de basis van dit christelijk geïnspireerde fresco. Het verwijst naar een van de 'werken van barmhartigheid', vermeld in het evangelie van Matteus.
